Protect Yourself and Others From Drunk Driving in Daytona Beach

Driving drunk is madness. We all know this, but it takes time before social behavior changes enough to reject it as unacceptable. Progress has been made, though: 25 years ago, alcohol-related fatalities still represented 60 percent of all traffic fatalities. This percentage has now dropped to less than 35 percent.

For certain drivers in Northeast and Central East Florida, this is the time to shed the outdated, and dangerous, habit of comingling driving and drinking, and review the false assumption that when they have been drinking, they are still able to drive. Your first line of action is to:

Protect yourself from drinking
  • Don't fool yourself, and know the facts. The alcohol content of a can of beer, glass of wine or mixed drink with liquor is approximately the same. Alcohol impairs your driving even at low levels. Even with a blood alcohol content of .06 the fatal crash risk is already 8 times higher than if you have no alcohol in your blood. The effect of alcohol is compounded when taken with drugs, legal or not, and when fatigued.
  • Eat food while you drink. Food, especially high protein food like meat, cheese and peanuts, helps slow the absorption of alcohol in your body.
  • Sip your drink. Go for the better quality drinks, even if more expensive; take the time to savor its flavor and aromas.
  • Accept a drink only if you want one. Stay in control and decide when and what to drink. If your glass is refilled every 4 minutes, leave it full. Ask for water or non-alcohol beverage to drink in between your wine or beer. You should stick to no more than one alcoholic drink per hour.
  • Stay active. Just sitting and drinking is not going to lead you anywhere. Engage with other people, go for food rather than alcohol, go outside, or for a short walk.
  • Be aware: Look at what alcohol does to others. If you drink moderately, you will soon notice, after a couple of hours, how the other people's behavior changes, and how their speech becomes slurred. Think of what it can do to their driving.
