Learn Safe Driving in Wet Weather

The best way to drive safely in wet weather is to prepare for it. Unfortunately, statistics show that up to 37 percent of drivers do nothing to prepare for the eventuality of having to drive in adverse weather conditions.

Be cautious. It is best not to drive at all if you are upset or in a rush. It can be difficult to concentrate if you drive at a time when you would normally be asleep. The best practice would be to share the driving with someone else if you have to drive at such a time.

Little things count. Make sure you are comfortable when driving. Do not wear clothes that will restrict your movement. Make sure you are just the right distance from the steering wheel—close enough to bend your elbows, but far enough so you can see the road ahead.

Make sure your windshield is clean, and that your windshield wipers are clean and working well. Double check that you have good tread on your tires, and that your car is mechanically sound. If you have to stop during a long trip to clean your windshield or headlights, do so.

If it is raining too hard, just pull off the road and wait until visibility improves. Don't take any chances.

Learn the skills needed to drive in poor-traction conditions. If you need to, get out onto a empty parking lot and practice driving in bad weather conditions. Better safe than sorry.
