On U.S. 1 near Steamboat Drive, a motorcycle collided with and skidded beneath a tow truck. The seriously injured biker was later found by paramedics some 20 feet from the crash site, and immediately transported by helicopter to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. North and southbound lanes were briefly shut down, allowing the Florida Highway Patrol to investigate the accident. The injured motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet, according to a Florida Today report.
In a recent blog post we commented on a few of the main causes of serious motorcycle crashes in Florida. A recent study shows a steep increase to 51 percent in 2008, up from 33 percent ten years earlier, in fatal motorcycle accidents for the age group of 40 years or more.
Another major cause of fatal bike crashes is speeding. The study shows that motorcycles are far more likely to be involved in high-speed crashes than passenger cars.
And, of course, we cannot stress enough the importance of wearing a helmet. Most national studies have shown ample evidence of the five- to seven-fold increase in the accident fatality rate of motorcyclists who do not wear safety helmets.
Unfortunately, even prudent and experienced bikers can be hurt or killed in accidents caused by reckless, negligent, distracted, or drunken drivers of passenger cars or trucks. If you or someone you love has been the victim of such an accident, then you may be entitled to compensation for your pain, suffering, medical expenses, and loss of income.
