

A Daytona Beach car accident involving a single vehicle claims the life of an 18-year-old Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) student and leaves four others injured. The incident took place at approximately 8:30 on Friday morning, February 10, 2012, along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, the car was traveling southbound along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in front of the John H. Dickerson Community Center when the driver veered off the road and slammed into a utility pole. There were five B-CU students in the car at the time of the accident.
One of the students, 18-year-old Marcus A. Thomas, was traveling in the front seat and not wearing a seatbelt. His head struck the windshield. Unfortunately, Mr. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Rescue crews transported the four other students, including 18-year-old driver Carl A. Beasley Jr., to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Mr. Beasley suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The fatal Daytona Beach car accident remains under investigation by local authorities. Police indicate that Mr. Beasley may have fallen asleep when he crashed into the utility pole.
