A Florida motorcycle accident left two dead in Howey-in-the-Hills over the January 11–12 weekend.
The motorcycle driver, Michael F. Gilbo, and his wife, Sandra P. Gilbo, both of Jacksonville, were struck by another driver and died from injuries caused by the collision.
According to police, a four-door Toyota sedan going southbound on State Road 19, driven by Zora Kunde of Howey, crossed the yellow line and made its way into a group of four bikers going northbound. The vehicle sideswiped one of the motorcycles and hit another head-on, causing the Gilbos to eject.
The accident occurred around 2:30 pm near Savage Circle, just south of the Howey Bridge.
Mr. Gilbo was taken to Florida Hospital Waterman in Tavares, where he later died. Mrs. Gilbo was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center, and passed away Saturday night.
Police say the Gilbos were wearing helmets and other protective equipment, but the force of the accident was too much to sustain. After the accident, Kunde sought medical attention at Leesburg Regional Medical Center for chest pains.
The other bikers in the group were from Volusia County. The Gilbos met up with the group somewhere between Jacksonville and Honey-in-the-Hills, and began riding with them.
Police are conducting an investigation into the accident. So far, charges have not been filed.
