  • Tire blowout sends tractor-trailer into I-95 median
    Dec 17, 2010

In the early morning hours of Saturday, a southbound semi-truck blew a tire between LPGA Boulevard and International Speedway Boulevard. The driver could not prevent the truck from lurching into the median, where it caught fire. According to a report by the Daytona Beach News Journal, nobody was seriously hurt in the accident.

Hazardous materials started seeping from a number of leaking drums, but Daytona Beach and Volusia County firefighters were able to control the fire within 20 minutes.

Several hours were needed to clean up the leaked material and the damage to the roadway.

Later, a Florida DOT spokesman indicated that pavement work was going to be necessary due to the corrosive nature of the leaked product.

Luckily, in this case there were no fatalities or serious injuries, probably due to the absence of traffic at the time of the accident. At a different hour or on another day this crash could have had a very different outcome.

The size of the truck, the tire blowout, the dangerous cargo, the loss of control (weight, cargo shift, speed)—these are all the ingredients of terrible Florida truck accidents.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash caused by a large truck, 18-wheeler or tractor-trailer, you are probably facing enormous difficulties: medical bills, long term rehabilitation, loss of income, pain and suffering. Getting compensation from the motor carrier and their insurers could add to your burden because they are often skilled at hiding damaging evidence and defending their financial interests. You should call the Ormond Beach truck accident attorneys of Johnson & Gilbert for a FREE discussion of your case.

  • Disney World Bus Crash Injured Infant Boy and 5-Year-Old Girl
    Jul 24, 2009

A Disney World bus collision resulted in the injuries of a 5-year-old girl and 6-week-old infant boy.  The young girl bruised her face after she fell forward onto the bus seat.  The father of the two children had been holding the baby during the accident and fell toward a bus window, pushing the infant into the window.  All three family members went to a nearby hospital to be examined following the collision.

Approximately 50 passengers were on board each bus when the accident occurred.  Twelve people were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

Disney World buses are used to take guests back and forth between Disney resort hotels, theme parks, water parks and the Downtown Disney shopping center.  These buses tend to become crowded and guests sometimes have to stand up while the bus is in operation.

Bus safety is regulated differently than auto safety.  Recently, citizen action resulted in new safety belt requirements for school buses.  However, the majority of private and public transit buses do not have safety features, such as seat belts.  Injuries can occur even when a bus is traveling slowly, as was shown in the Disney World bus accident.
