Just before 11 p.m. on Monday, 17-year-old Adolfo Carmenate was driving his small, white Honda eastbound on Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee. In the car were Yaritza DeJesus Campos, aged 17, and 1-year-old Yadiel Carmenate. Attempting to change lanes, the driver apparently lost control of the car, entered into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming pickup truck head-on, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
All three occupants of the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene of this Florida accident. The driver of the pickup truck, Mayra Santiago, 49, and her passenger, Esteban Rivera-Fuentes, 24, were pulled out of the vehicle and taken by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center, apparently with minor injuries.
Investigators said the teenagers were wearing seat belts and the child was restrained in a car seat. The exact cause of the accident is not known at this time. Some witnesses said the Honda may have been speeding, while investigators noted the car was riding on a spare tire which could have been a cause of the crash. Alcohol and drugs are not considered to have played a role in the accident.
There is very little you can do to avoid a car crossing the median towards you. It all happens in a split second. The only thing Florida motorists can do to limit the risks of accidents caused by drivers losing control of their vehicles is to campaign and vote for strict law enforcement regarding drivers' qualifications.
