Two weeks ago, Maximillian Guevara, aged 7, of Merritt Island, was riding his bicycle westbound on Alma Boulevard when a 1997 Ford pickup truck crossed into his path. Maximillian's bicycle struck the truck, and he was seriously injured in the Florida crash. The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando according to reports in Florida Today.
Maximilian is now wheelchair-bound for at least the next eight weeks with a broken leg, a broken rib, several stitches to his left arm and an issue with one of his lungs.
"It's a miracle that he is going to be OK," his mother declared to Florida Today, adding, "Our lives have been thrown upside-down, with all the doctor appointments, the physical therapy and my work cleaning houses."
Brian Berka, 41, of Merritt Island, was later arrested at his mother's house by Florida Highway Patrol troopers, and confessed to fleeing the scene of the accident.
A search by Brevard County sheriff's deputies led to the discovery of the damaged pickup truck in a Target store parking lot several blocks from the crash site.
Berka has an extensive arrest record involving burglary, fraud and drugs, as well as several traffic violations. He was released from state prison after serving a five-year sentence on a theft charge.
