In the early morning hours of Saturday, a southbound semi-truck blew a tire between LPGA Boulevard and International Speedway Boulevard. The driver could not prevent the truck from lurching into the median, where it caught fire. According to a report by the Daytona Beach News Journal, nobody was seriously hurt in the accident.
Hazardous materials started seeping from a number of leaking drums, but Daytona Beach and Volusia County firefighters were able to control the fire within 20 minutes.
Several hours were needed to clean up the leaked material and the damage to the roadway.
Later, a Florida DOT spokesman indicated that pavement work was going to be necessary due to the corrosive nature of the leaked product.
Luckily, in this case there were no fatalities or serious injuries, probably due to the absence of traffic at the time of the accident. At a different hour or on another day this crash could have had a very different outcome.
The size of the truck, the tire blowout, the dangerous cargo, the loss of control (weight, cargo shift, speed)—these are all the ingredients of terrible Florida truck accidents.
If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash caused by a large truck, 18-wheeler or tractor-trailer, you are probably facing enormous difficulties: medical bills, long term rehabilitation, loss of income, pain and suffering. Getting compensation from the motor carrier and their insurers could add to your burden because they are often skilled at hiding damaging evidence and defending their financial interests.
