A Winter Haven car accident involving two vehicles results in the death of a teenage girl. The incident took place at approximately 7:30 PM on Friday evening, November 13, 2009.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened when Amber Shaw, 17, a senior at Chain of Lakes Collegiate High School on the Winter Haven campus of Polk State College, lost control of her vehicle. She was driving a green 1999 Hyundai when she spun off the road. Her vehicle then veered back onto the roadway striking a 2000 Chevrolet driven by Lucinda Shelby, 52, of Winter Haven.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Shaw was heading west on Dundee Road, just west of Carl Floyd Road, when she left the roadway and entered the north grassy shoulder. Her car spun out of control as she reentered the eastbound lane of Dundee road striking Shelby’s vehicle on the driver’s side.

Rescue workers pronounced Shaw dead at the scene. Shelby did not suffer injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. There were no other passengers reported.

The two-vehicle car crash is still under investigation by local authorities. It is unknown why Shaw lost control of her Hyundai.
