Driving while texting may become unlawful/daytona beach/Florida

Drivers in Daytona Beach and throughout Florida could soon see blue and red flashing lights in the rear view mirror if they are driving while texting.  The Federal Government is seeking passage of a law that would make it unlawful for drivers to text while driving.  Currently, 14 states already have laws that prohibit this activity, but Florida is not one of them.  Recent studies have shown that truck drivers are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident while texting.  This is compared to drivers being 4 times more likely to be involved in a car accident while talking on a cell phone.  If the bill passes, any state that does not outlaw driving while texting within 2 years would risk losing 25% of their federal highway funds. Although not illegal now, this measure is gaining in popularity.  We will keep an eye on this bill and will post updates as more information is available.
