16 People Injured, 5 Killed in Two Marion County Crashes

Posted on Nov 01, 2011

The appalling succession of deadly crashes on Interstate 75 continues. A collision on Saturday left four people dead near the County Road 326 exit, while another crash on Sunday claimed the life of a driver and injured two children.

On Sunday, according to the Marion County Fire Rescue Department, John H. Rogers, aged 61, of Lady Lake, was traveling with two children southbound on I-75 when, for a reason thus far unknown, he lost control of his van and rolled over near mile marker 344. Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both children were taken to Shands University of Florida Children's Hospital; a girl, Ashlyn Kubusheski, aged 7, in serious condition, was transported by ambulance, while a 6-year-old boy, Casey Kubusheski, was airlifted by helicopter in critical condition.

The boy's condition was later improved to serious. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, it is not known whether the driver and two children were restrained.

Fire Rescue spokesman Nick Fortuna described the accident on Saturday as involving 11 vehicles. The crash was triggered between mile marker 358 and 360 at around 3:00 p.m. when Darrian George, aged 17, from Tucker, Ga., lost control of his Chevrolet Tahoe while traveling south on I-75. The Tahoe crossed the grass median where the vehicle rolled over several times, ejecting six of the eight occupants.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Darrian George was killed, as well as a 30-year-old woman and two children. One passenger had been wearing a seatbelt, and suffered only minor injuries.

How the other vehicles got involved in this Florida crash is unknown at this time, while the FHP continues its investigation. A total of 14 people were injured in this accident.
