Posted on Aug 05, 2010

The first of several accidents this week occurred when a car veered off the road on I-95 near State Road 407 in Titusville. There were three fatalities in that accident.

The next serious accident stopped I-95 traffic near Rockledge. Three people were thrown from the car and two others were trapped after the vehicle exited the highway and went into the woods. There was at least one fatality.

Several other accidents happened on Interstate 95 at about the same time, but no serious injuries were reported.
The accidents occurred during heavy rains in Brevard County.

Driving in the rain
Driving in the rain requires that you take special precautions to avoid accidents.

• Go slowly; you require a greater distance to stop when the roads are wet.

• Water pools in outside lanes, so stay near the middle.

• Increase your following distance from the car in front of you.

• Follow the tracks of the car ahead of you.

• Large trucks and buses create spray that can reduce your vision if you follow too closely. When you pass, do so quickly and safely.

• Always watch out for brake lights in front of you.

• Try not to use your brakes. Decelerate to slow down.

• Keep your headlights or running lights on so you can see better and so that others can see you.

• Replace your old wipers

• Don't drive off the road or you may become stuck.

• Never drive when conditions do not allow for good visibility. Night driving in the rain makes it especially hard to see ahead.

• Don't drive through running water unless you can see the bottom.

• If you drive through a puddle make sure it is not deeper than the bottom of your doors.

• Don't splash pedestrians.

• Avoid driving during heavy thunderstorms.

Driving through bad weather and rain means taking more precautions. Always take them.
