The Gainesville Gazette reports that an Alachua County deputy, Sgt. Scott Ulrich, was outside his 2007 Crown Victoria patrol car on the west emergency lane of southbound Interstate 75, when the car was hit by another vehicle Monday morning at about 6 a.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Ulrich, an Alachua County deputy since December 1996, was responding to an earlier crash. FHP Trooper Keith Davis said the patrol car was hit by a four-door 2003 BMW driven by Nevada Tawanna Bass, 34, of Georgia. She and her passenger, Ursula Germaine Twyman, 39, of Lauderdale, were transported to North Florida Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
Davis further confirmed that Ulrich had properly parked the patrol car with its emergency lights activated. The collision may be partly explained by the heavy rain that poured down at the time of the crash, which occurred near mile marker 391, about a mile north of the 39th Avenue interchange where Ulrich was attending to a multiple-vehicle accident.
No other injuries were reported in this Florida crash. The collision blocked all three southbound lanes for more than 90 minutes. Drivers going south were detoured off the interstate at U.S. 441. No charges had been filed yet at the time of the report, pending further investigation.
