Recently, 26 people and 15 vehicles were involved in a traffic accident that began when a 16 year old’s car began hydroplaning. This set off a chain reaction on Interstate 75. The crash occurred during torrential rain resulting from tropical storm Nicole.
No one was injured in any life threatening manner. However, three victims were injured seriously and another 13 people received minor injuries. The accident took place in the northbound lanes of I-75 during the worst of the storm that dumped at least an inch of rain on the highway, as reported by the National Weather Service.
According to authorities, it took more than six hours for the accident to be cleared so traffic could return to normal.
The 16-year-old driver lost control of his four door Nissan as a result of hydroplaning. The car left the roadway before stopping in the west side emergency lane and crossing into one traffic lane.
Charges are pending against the driver for failure to use proper care when special hazards exist.
Another driver stopped to help the 16-year-old and got out of her truck. Her vehicle was then hit by other cars trying to stop, and she was injured. The Good Samaritan was taken the University of Florida hospital in serious condition.
Another 13 drivers tried to avoid the scene by steering away from those that had slowed or stopped. Conditions, however, prevented them from avoiding a collision.
