Campaign Emphasizes Dangers of Drivers Using Cell Phones in Florida

Posted on Jul 10, 2009

The billboards can be seen in various cities across Florida, including Daytona Beach, Tallahassee, Ocala and Fort Meyers.  The National Safety Council has placed these billboards in cities across the country as part of its “Death by Cell Phone Campaign” to raise awareness of the dangers of using a cell phone while driving.

According to the council, nearly 3000 people are killed each year because of drivers using cell phones.  The National Safety Council estimates that approximately 56,000 people in Florida will see these billboards every day.

Jay Anderson, executive director of Stay Alive…Just Drive!, supports this national campaign and said that the best way to cause change is to educate drivers of using cell phones on the road.  His organization deals with preventing traffic crashes and raising awareness to reduce the amount of distracted drivers on the road.

Using a cell phone while driving, is a common activity for many people.  A 2008 Nationwide Insurance survey found that approximately 80 percent of cell phone owners reported that they talk while driving and nearly 20 percent said that they text and drive.

Some states have banned the use of handheld cell phones while driving, but it is still legal in Florida.  Various bills have been proposed that would ban handheld cell phones, but all have failed.
