Monday at 1:50 p.m. in front of the Turner Square shopping complex at Jupiter and Eldron Boulevards, the driver of a Honda Accord, trying to avoid hitting a Chevrolet Camaro, slammed the gas pedal instead of the brake and crashed into a storefront.
The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Palm Bay Hospital. The building, a leasing office for the shopping center, suffered moderate damage to the structure, according to a report by Florida Today.
On the previous day, a 66-year-old woman sent her Chevrolet Tracker through the front of Sam’s Liquor at the Palm Crossing shopping center on Palm Bay Road in West Melbourne. The driver, Monique Blanchard of Palm Bay declared that the gas pedal on her SUV got stuck.
These accidents have fortunately resulted only in material damage and light injuries. It is, however, worrying to watch how the erratic behavior of some drivers would possibly cause terrible injuries and death to unsuspecting pedestrians in crowded shopping center parking lots.
As we stressed in a recent article, there has to be a time when elderly car owners should consider giving up their driving privileges. The rate of accidents increases dramatically with old age and ill health, making such a painful decision necessary to save lives.
