Last Monday afternoon, riding his Suzuki motorcycle at high speed northbound on Mount Vernon Avenue, David Sigmore, 37 years old from Titusville, somehow veered into the southbound lane and struck a 1987 Ford Mustang head-on.
According to a Florida Today report, witnesses saw the motorcycle land at quite a distance behind the Mustang, Sigmore hitting the pavement violently on his head.
“Because he didn’t have serious head injuries, we are convinced his helmet saved his life,” one witness said. Sigmore was flown by helicopter to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, his overall condition being described as serious.
The driver of the Mustang, Joseph Thomas Higgins, 36, of Titusville was not injured.
In Brevard County, of the 15 deadly motorcycle accidents last year, only 5 of the riders were wearing a helmet. “This bike crash is certainly something that people who don’t wear helmets should see and learn from,” Titusville’s Lt. Todd Hutchinson said.
In a recent article on motorcycle helmet use in Florida we pointed out that:
• Helmets are very effective in reducing crash fatalities and serious head injuries;
• Helmets do not have any noticeable disadvantages;
• Mandatory helmet laws dramatically reduce motorcycle crash fatalities;
• And helmet use significantly reduces the cost of medical treatment born by the community.
