A 39-year old man was killed early on Sunday when he lost control of his 2005 Harley-Davidson.
Riding northbound on Avalon Road, the biker left the roadway in a curve, about a mile north of Flemings Road, hit a barbed-wire fence and was thrown into a tree. According to a Sun Sentinel report, the man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Approximately 25 percent of all bike crashes are single vehicle accidents like this one. While some of them are caused by sudden obstacles, like deer, pedestrians, fallen trees, etc., two-thirds are due to biker errors.
What common errors do Florida motorcyclists make?
The typical error in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash is a slide-out and fall, due to overbraking. Another is running wide on a curve, as reported above, due to excess speed or under-cornering.
This being said, some 75 percent of all motorcycle crashes involve multiple vehicles, and in two-thirds of these cases, the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcyclist’s right-of-way. The failure of passenger car and commercial vehicle drivers to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is a critical and predominant factor.
