Local mayor comes to the aid of a woman following a New Smyrna car accident after a vehicle drives into the Intracoastal Waterway. The incident took place on Wednesday, January 7, 2010.
According to reports, Suzanne Grims, 66, was involved in a car accident that sent her vehicle into the Intracoastal Waterway. New Smyrna Mayor Adam Barringer was participating in a ceremony at Riverside Manatee Park and came to the aid of the woman who was trapped in the submerged vehicle.
Along with three other citizens, Barringer jumped into the cold waters to help free Grims from the vehicle. Rescue workers transported Grims to a nearby hospital and treated her for injuries sustained in the accident. She was later released.
“The car was bobbing,” said Mayor Barringer, a former Volusia County lifeguard. “It was something out of a movie. The car was filling up with water so fast.”
Barringer gave credit to one of the other civilian rescuers. “He was the real hero who convinced the lady to roll down her window,” said the Mayor. “It was by the grace of God we got her out.”
The New Smyrna auto accident is still under investigation by local authorities. According to the Orlando Sentinel, police have alleged that Grims was to blame.
