Brandon Lee Benton, aged 27, was driving a 1996 Chevy sport utility vehicle east on Colonial Drive last Friday when he failed to stop for a red light. The SUV struck a 1997 Dodge Stratus that was heading south towards the intersection on Chuluota Road. The Stratus had a green signal.
The driver of the Stratus, John Allan Knorr, 42, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center (OMRC) in critical condition. His son, Matthew, aged 17, was a passenger and was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a report by the Orlando Sentinel.
Matthew Knorr, the middle child of three and an East River High School rising senior, enjoyed hunting, a pastime he'd learned from his grandfather. Matthew relished spending weekends with his grandparents, helping them with shopping, mowing the grass, anything.
Above all, Matthew loved being with his dad, a disabled former mechanic. "They were basically inseparable," says Jessica Knorr, John's wife and Matthew's mother. Jessica remains by her husband's side at OMRC while he battles for his life.
John Knorr had recently purchased Matthew a used pick-up truck. The boy hoped to get his driver's license in November after his 18th birthday.
Benton, the SUV driver, suffered only minor injuries and was not hospitalized. The Florida crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
