Palm Coast Woman Critically Injured In Single-Vehicle Crash

Posted on Jul 07, 2011

Doreen E. Silva was heading north on the inside lane of U.S.1 when her 2009 Nissan Versa drifted onto the shoulder. According to a witness, Silva overcorrected, and her car spun across the northbound lanes to hit a highway sign and a tree, ending up rolling over onto its roof.

Silva was taken to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach where she was said to be in critical condition Sunday night, the News Journal reports.

Why did Silva's car veer towards the shoulder? The answer is not known, but her overcorrection suggests that she was distracted for a second or two.

Many motorists do not realize, as they fumble with a cell phone or coffee cup, that a car travels 28 yards per second, at a speed of 60 miles per hour.

Two seconds of inattention is enough to allow your vehicle to ride 56 yards off the lane, towards the shoulder or another lane. When the driver suddenly realizes he or she is about to run off the road, or about to hit another vehicle, the result is panic and overreaction.

Just as we hope that Mrs. Silva will soon recover from her injuries, we urge our readers to stay focused on the road, remembering the math: 1 second equals 28 yards.
