Robert Nicholas Panepinto, a 49-year old professor at Flagler College, was struck on Thursday afternoon by a car while riding on a scooter, according to a report by the St. Augustine Record. The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. near Ocean Trace Road. Panepinto was travelling south on his scooter on A1A in the left turn lane. A Toyota sedan, driven by Kent Andrews, 54, was driving north in the inside lane and failed to stop for the red light at the intersection, hitting the scooter as it turned left.
The professor was airlifted to Shands Jacksonville in critical condition.
We sincerely hope that professor Panepinto will soon recover from his injuries and we extend our warmest sympathies to him and his family and friends.
Road accidents like this one leave a trail of devastation behind: loss of life, pain and suffering from terrible injuries — sometimes with long lasting or lifetime disabilities —, huge medical bills, loss of income. When the accident is caused by a careless driver, the victim and his loved ones cannot rebuild their lives without compensation. The sad reality is that many cases involving serious and long lasting injuries are bitterly fought by the defendant party, usually an insurance company who wants to protect their financial interests and shortchange the just settlement to which the victims are entitled.
