The Florida crash occurred early Thursday when a bus that was not carrying children ran a red light at the intersection of Old Winter Garden Road and Good Homes Road, crashing into a Kia sedan.
The bus driver, 32-year-old Joinel Jorcelin, was in serious condition when he was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC). Investigators said the driver of the Kia, 52-year-old Cang Trung To was in critical condition and is fighting for his life at ORMC. Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the bus hit the Kia at the driver's door, damaging the car to such extent that the driver had to be extricated by emergency personnel, according to a WFTV.com report.
Bus driver Jorcelin had been with the school district for five years, investigators said. The District Transportation Management declared that deciding a course of action will have to wait until a full crash report is made available. Jerry Huckeba of Orange County Schools said: "We rely greatly on what Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) gives us as far as a report on incidents. As with any incidents like this, we're going to spend a lot of time investigating."
The school district performs drug and alcohol tests whenever there is an accident with injuries involving a driver. The FHP declared it will view on-board video from the bus that may confirm who was at fault, and that charges are pending.
