A spectacular explosion and fire killed two and seriously damaged an overpass on SR 528 when a pickup truck hit a tanker in Brevard County last Friday. Once again the cause of the accident is stated as “loss of control” by the pickup truck driver. Too many drivers do not seem to realize that driving requires keeping control of their vehicle, at all times. Tanker truck fire kills two and damages bridge in Brevard County.

Posted on Feb 03, 2011

Last Friday, at around 3.30 p.m. a tanker carrying 2,000 gallons of gasoline collided with a small pickup truck. Both vehicles were traveling westbound on SR 528 when the pickup, traveling behind the tanker, somehow lost control and stroke the right rear side of the tanker. The pickup rolled over several times while the semi-truck continued through a barrier wall into the eastbound lanes of SR 528 and burst in flames, according to a MyFox Orlando report.

The spectacular ensuing explosion and fire inflicted considerable damage to the 528 overpass on Courtenay Parkway and made it impossible to identify immediately the two people killed in the crash. It is expected that repairs to the bridge could take 6 weeks.

Drivers losing control?

In countless cases reported by the media every week, catastrophic accidents like this one are caused by drivers “losing control.” There is something unnerving about losing control being a cause of accidents. Are drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol, are they watching videos, are they texting, or simply unwrapping sandwiches? Or are they angry, speeding, reckless or simply inexperienced?

It seems many of these drivers do not understand the seriousness of driving and do not realize how devastating an out-of-control vehicle can be, to themselves and to others.
