Helen M. Miller was driving her 2000 Dodge Caravan eastwards across the bridge on State Road 46 between Sanford and Geneva. She veered off onto the wrong side of the road, sideswiping an oncoming tow truck. The impact sent the Caravan rotating and smashing into a 1998 Ford F-150 truck traveling behind the tow truck. The Caravan ended its course on the north portion of the bridge, facing northeast.
The tow truck was sent crashing into the bridge's northern concrete wall. The Ford pick-up truck also hit the wall and ended hanging partially over the wall.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Miller was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Ford truck driver, Lambert J. Eichner, 25, was transported to the same hospital with minor injuries. The tow-truck driver, Jose M. Torres, 48, also suffered minor injuries but was not hospitalized.
The bridge was closed during several hours as crews investigated the crash and cleared the road.
Many reports of tragic motor vehicle accidents in Florida tell the story but do not explain why the crash happened. What is the cause of the thousands of single-vehicle crashes, red-light-running wrecks, head-on collisions and rear-ending accidents? Is it speeding, driving under the influence, distraction, falling asleep or a heart attack?
Why do vehicles suddenly cross the median to hit someone in the opposite traffic lane? Why do cars fail to stop? Why do motorcycles veer off the lane in a curve? Why do SUVs roll over into the embankment?
There may be a serious problem with more and more drivers who do not see the responsibility associated with driving, for whom driving is a harmless occupation that can be done any way they want.
