Even though the 17,000-acre Iron Horse forest fire along the Volusia - Brevard county line has been contained since last Sunday, various hot spots continue to smolder and smoke.
The smoke, added to the early morning fog, caused visibility problems on Interstate 95 and was a contributing factor in a crash involving a semi-trailer and a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser on Tuesday.
According to a Daytona Beach News Journal report, Sergeant Jeffrey Holmes was driving north at 05.10 a.m., patrolling the fire zone. Visibility was quickly dropping, and troopers were preparing to shut down the highway. Driving slowly, Holmes was suddenly rear-ended by a large truck, and pushed off the road while the semi-trailer disappeared in the fog.
Holmes suffered only minor injuries that did not require transportation to the hospital, but his car was totaled. The accident happened two miles north of Brevard County Road 5A, close to where five cars had crashed the previous morning.
FHP spokesman Montes reminded that a speed limit of 70 mph is only valid in ideal weather conditions and that drivers are obliged to adjust their speed in more dangerous weather conditions.
