A Florida car accident involving a woman in a wheelchair ends in her death when a car strikes her. The South Daytona accident took place at approximately 1:30 PM on Monday afternoon, October 26, 2009.
According to South Daytona police Lt. Ron Wright, the accident occurred on S. Ridgewood Avenue, just north of Woodland Boulevard in South Daytona. That is where Diane Elizabeth Knoop, 69, of South Daytona, was attempting to cross Ridgewood in her power wheelchair and was hit by a car traveling southbound on Ridgewood, also referred to as U.S. Highway 1.
The car that hit Knoop was driven by Mary Louise Peless, 58, of Daytona Beach. Knoop rode her wheelchair into the path of Peless. Peless was unable to stop her vehicle in time and struck Knoop, pushing her and her wheelchair approximately 25 feet down the street, according to Wright.
Rescue workers transported Knoop to Halifax Health Medical Center. She was pronounced dead approximately four hours later from injuries suffered in the South Daytona accident.
Peless did not suffer any injuries.
The incident is still under investigation by local authorities. However, police have indicated that initial findings show that Knoop may have caused the crash because she did not use a designated crosswalk area. Charges are not expected to be filed against Peless, according to Wright.
