Though the summer ended, intoxicated drivers still hit the Florida roadways. As a result, Volusia County introduced a new DUI court program targeting “hardcore” DUI offenders.
A Look at the Facts
The numbers are startling. Each year:
- Approximately 1,000 people are arrested in Volusia County on the suspicion of driving while intoxicated or driving on a controlled substance.
- Nearly 20 percent of these are considered “hardcore,” meaning they have one prior arrest or have a BAC of 0.15 or higher.
- This group is 20 times more likely to be involved in a crash.
A Brief Synopsis of the Program
The new program requires participants to watch the sentencing of other suspects. Recently, 17 participants were required to watch a DUI offender being led away in handcuffs to begin an eight-year sentence for killing a couple in a drunk-driving crash.
Supporters of the program believe that participants are much less likely to drive again while intoxicated.
It is impossible to control the driving behaviors of those you share the roadways with. Their drunkenness can lead to you or a loved one being seriously injured in a crash. Fortunately, you have rights and might be able to hold them liable for your damages.
