An Orlando accident involving an Orange County deputy sheriff’s car and an elementary student leaves a child in critical condition. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, December 9, 2009.
According to Orlando police, Marqueasha Sabrii Henderson, 6, a kindergarten student at Orange Center Elementary school, was struck by a police cruiser as she was crossing John Young Parkway at Orange Center Boulevard. Reports indicate that the victim was startled by a horn and ran in front of the cruiser driven by Lt. Julie Blackmon.
Rescue workers transported Henderson to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children where she was treated for life-threatening injuries. According to officials, she was listed in critical but stable condition.
It was originally reported that the student was with her mother and two sisters when the incident took place. However, it was later reported that the woman seen with Henderson in the crosswalk was not her mother. The road that Henderson was crossing has been described as a six-lane road.
According to police, the speed of the cruiser was not a contributing factor in the crash. Blackmon has been described as a 23-year sheriff’s veteran and works for the agency’s youth services division.
The Orlando pedestrian accident is still under investigation by local authorities.
