Click-It or Ticket Campaign Starts Now in Florida

Posted on Jun 10, 2011

James Billings, 75, of Leesburg, died early last Friday when his pickup hit a loaded log truck. A second person was killed the same day in Altoona where car passenger Jessica Walker, 26, of Ocala, was ejected in a two-vehicle crash. None of the victims were wearing a seatbelt.

These are but a few of the countless auto accidents attended by the Florida Highway Patrol resulting in fatalities and serious injuries that could have been avoided had the car occupants buckled up. The National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) declared that law enforcement will be making a round-the-clock sweep for motorists who fail to wear a safety belt. According to NHTSA data, in 2009 in Florida, 344,511 safety belt citations were issued.

The good news is that, with the advent of the primary seatbelt law, Florida's seatbelt usage has climbed to an all-time high of 87.5 percent, DailyCommercial.com reports.

It has been calculated that 908 traffic accident fatalities could have been avoided in Florida in 2010 had the vehicle occupants been restrained with a seatbelt.

The campaign's website, www.clickitfla.com features informative facts and figures that include the estimated yearly number of fatalities due to lack of safety belt use in the following counties:

  • Volusia: 39
  • Brevard: 26
  • Orange: 55
  • Duval: 38
  • Polk: 53
