Daytona Beach Accident Leaves Deputy Suspended

Posted on Jan 13, 2010

A Daytona Beach car accident involving a Volusia County deputy and a South Daytona Beach police cruiser leaves the officer facing a lengthy suspension.

According to a sheriff’s office spokesperson, John Harvey, 51, a Volusia County deputy, was suspended from his job for 20 days without pay after the deputy crashed into a South Daytona Beach police cruiser. Harvey was charged with driving under the influence following the incident.

Harvey faced additional charges including DUI with property damage, fleeing the scene of an accident, careless driving and refusing to take an alcohol breathe test. However, Harvey was able to negotiate a deal. In exchange for pleading no contest, his charges were reduced to reckless driving.

In addition to the 20 day suspension without pay, Harvey faces six months of probation.  He also has been required to pay $1,016 in court costs, fines and fees.  Lastly, Harvey will be required to attend DUI school.

It was unclear whether Harvey or anyone else involved in the accident suffered any injuries. Also, there was no information available concerning the details of the accident, as well as the extent of damage to the vehicles, if any.

The Daytona Beach accident is still under investigation by local authorities.
