A Daytona Beach auto accident leaves a paramedic injured after his ambulance that was carrying two patients is struck by another vehicle. The incident took place at approximately 4:00 AM on Tuesday morning, February 2, 2010, on Interstate 95.
According to EVAC spokesperson Mark O’Keefe, the ambulance was just leaving the scene of an earlier accident on Interstate 95 near the 275 mile marker when the incident occurred. The unidentified EVAC ambulance driver was in the process of turning the ambulance around when a vehicle drove through the accident scene and struck the emergency vehicle.
The unidentified paramedic was transported to a local hospital and treated for injuries sustained in the accident, but was later released. Fortunately, the ambulance driver and a firefighter who was onboard the ambulance escaped injuries.
There were two patients who had been involved in the previous accident onboard the ambulance at the time of the incident. The unidentified victims were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center. One of the victims was listed in stable condition while the other in serious condition.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the ambulance refused treatment at the scene of the accident.
“The ambulance was using its emergency lights and siren,” O’Keefe said. “We are very fortunate that no one was killed.”
The Daytona Beach accident is still under investigation. Accidents can be catastrophic and our thoughts go out to all of those involved in this unfortunate accident.
