Two separate accidents in Jacksonville and Clay County are being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol, Jacksonville.com reports.
On Tuesday at 11:10 p.m., Michael A. Cayton, aged 31, of Middleburg, was driving southbound on County Road 209 north of Talisman Drive when he lost control for an unknown reason.
Crashing through a fence, Cayton's truck hit an above-ground swimming pool and crashed through another fence before coming to a standstill. Cayton was taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital where he was pronounced dead. He had been wearing a seatbelt.
On Wednesday at 3:40 a.m., George Emery Dunlap, aged 74, of Jacksonville, was traveling southbound on Florida 9A when his Ford van rode off the highway for an unknown reason, struck a concrete wall at the Lee Road overpass and caught fire. Dunlap died at the scene.
According to Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper, there were no signs that Dunlap applied the brakes before striking the barrier.
Many crashes are caused by drivers steering out of their lanes for unexplained reasons. The cause may be distraction, but when this happens, there is usually a sudden reaction, and braking and turning marks are clearly visible. Oftentimes, a driver has suffered a medical issue, which is more probable in the case of elderly drivers.
