According to authorities, an unidentified Orlando woman was struck by a car after she darted in front of it. Rescue crews transported the woman by helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center where she was treated for injuries sustained in the accident.
The victim’s condition was not made known, however, according to Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn, the woman was alert and communicating to rescue crews.
The identity of the driver has not been made known. It was unclear as to whether the driver was injured as a result of the accident.
This is not the first pedestrian accident reported in the area. According to reports, there have been five traffic-related deaths on the beach since 1983. A 4-year-old girl lost her life two weeks ago after she was struck while crossing traffic lanes on the beach.
The New Smyrna Beach pedestrian accident is still under investigation by local authorities. It was unclear whether charges will be brought forth.
Pedestrian accidents can be serious. We wish the victim a speedy recovery during this difficult time.
