An Orange County deputy attempted to pull over a speeding motorcyclist and his passenger at the Beachline when the crash occurred.
The motorcycle rider slowed down to pull over, and was hit from behind by a coming pickup truck that failed to reduce its speed. Troopers said the truck ran into the back of the motorcycle and threw both riders off.
According to a report by ClickOrlando.com both motorcyclists suffered critical injuries. One man was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center and is expected to live, and a woman was airlifted to Florida Hospital East, where she was pronounced dead, troopers said.
The crash occurred last Saturday on State Road 520. The westbound lanes of SR 520 remained closed while troopers investigated the accident.
This tragic event illustrates again the terrible consequences the slightest distraction or mistake has on unprotected motorcyclists.
Motorcycles have powerful engines in relation to their weight and slow down quickly when decelerating, without even a need to use brakes. What would have been, for a car, a small rear-end collision with the truck coming from behind became a deadly crash sending two motorcyclists flying to terrible injuries.
Witnessing countless crashes caused by other motorists, our attorneys will never stop advocating more cautious and defensive motorcycle riding and the use of protective gear.
