Highway accidents take tens of thousands of lives each year in America. In most years there more American fatalities are caused by car accidents than occurred during the entire Vietnam war. In addition, more than three million are injured each year in traffic crashes. These accidents cost the country over $100 billion annually in medical costs and property damage. That is almost $400 million lost each day on America's roadways.
With a limited staff, the U.S. Office of Highway Safety focuses on investigating accidents that are likely to challenge the public's confidence in the highway transportation system. The goal is to recommend safety regulations that will prevent more accidents in the future. High public interest will also cause the office to investigate certain types of accidents.
This is a change of priorities for the Safety Board. Previously, it primarily investigated single major crashes. The change was made in order to better represent typical accidents on American highways. The Safety Board is constantly working to make America's roadways safer.
