According to reports, new county laws intended to curb beach driving pedestrian accidents are doing just that. At of the beginning of September, no serious Volusia County pedestrian accidents involving motorized vehicles were reported along the 17 beaches encompassing 47 miles of shoreline that allow driving.

About the New Ordinance

The new ordinance was recently passed by County officials. Some of the highlights of the new ordinance include the:

  • Requirement of all drivers to roll down a window.
  • Use of headlights.
  • Ban of texting and driving
  • Creation of one-way driving zones.

Motivation Behind the New Ordinance

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the new changes were motivated by the fact that two children were killed in two separate pedestrian accidents in 2010. In addition, two women were run over by Beach Patrol pickup trucks in 2011. Similar incidents occurred in 2003, 2005, and 2006.
