Interstate Highway 95 recently saw an early morning accident involving a tanker truck. The accident closed two northbound lanes. The lanes were reopened as soon as possible but some serious delays were encountered.
Traffic had to slow to a crawl when a fuel tanker truck with 9000 gallons of fuel caught fire at about 7:30 in the morning. Information was scarce about fuel that may have been spilled. The traffic backup went past Boynton Beach Boulevard, and drivers were advised to seek alternative routes. Some alternate routes at this point of the interstate include the Florida Turnpike, Congress Avenue or Military Trail.
One eyewitness reported, “I was heading south and came upon this before there was any police activity. I couldn't believe cars were slowing down to look at it. I hopped into the right lane and got out of there as fast as possible. If that tanker blew, all the on lookers would have went up with it.”
It should almost go without saying that “rubber necking” to view the grisly details of an automobile or truck accident is never a good idea. It is a road distraction that can lead to another crash with serious consequences.
There were accidents in other parts of the country and commuters were inconvenienced in several locations during the morning commute.
Two southbound I-95 lanes at Blue Heron Boulevard were closed but reopened a short time later. A crash also blocked the middle lane near 45th Street and I-95. Again, this accident occurred during the middle of rush hour.
