On Sunday morning of August 8, two people died in a Putnam County crash when their sport utility vehicle swerved to avoid hitting an animal in the road. Five passengers were in the vehicle, three of whom were injured. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased—one of whom was a student at University Christian School—and our hopes for a speedy recovery to the injured.
The principal of University Christian high school was shocked to hear of the student's death. He said the teenager was well liked and popular among her peers. She was unafraid to express her opinions and easily made friends with those around her. She was very involved with the spiritual activities at the school, and she will be sadly missed.
Unfortunately, her death was the third to strike the school's community in the past seven months. A student was killed earlier this year, and a campus minister died earlier in the summer after being struck by a car. The principal expressed his belief that God's word is truth, but none are guaranteed another day.
The vehicle, a 2003 Chevrolet, was traveling east on Florida 100 about two miles from Country Road 309D. The SUV swerved and crossed the center line, hitting trees as it went into the woods. It then overturned several times. Of the seven people in the SUV, three were thrown from the vehicle.
Two occupants suffered minor injuries (both were wearing seat belts). Three other occupants—only one of whom was wearing a seat belt—suffered more serious injuries. The two fatalities were not wearing seat belts. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
The driver was taken to Putnam Community Hospital, and the passengers were treated at Shands at the University of Florida.
