A passenger car with five people on board crashed head-on with a motorcycle last Sunday near the intersection of Silver Star Road and North-Apopka-Vineland Road in West Orange County.
The two people riding the motorcycle were thrown 50 feet from the bike. They were transported to Orlando Regional Healthcare Center and are in a critical condition. Neither of them was wearing a helmet, according to a report from WFTV.com.
The five occupants of the car were two adults and two children, who had to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, and one two-month old baby who was restrained in a child safety seat and was not injured.
The Florida Highway Patrol did not immediately explain what caused the collision.
The sad reality of motorcycling is that bikers are vulnerable, whatever the cause of the accident. Estimates on motorcycle crash causation show that a motorcyclist error is responsible for the crash in 37 percent of the cases, whereas in 50 percent of the crashes the primary contributing factor was an error on the part of the other vehicle driver.
