Truck driver falls asleep at the wheel on Interstate 4 in Florida

Posted on Oct 21, 2010

The driver of a semi-tractor trailer fell asleep at the wheel while driving, and the subsequent accident tied up traffic for hours on Interstate 4.

The driver claims he does not know what happened. He felt tired and then woke up after the accident.

According to witnesses the driver was weaving in and out of traffic before the crash. Florida Highway Patrol troopers checked the driver’s logbook and he was found to be in compliance. He had delivered a load on Monday night from Biloxi, MS and dropped it off on Tuesday. He was returning to Biloxi with an empty load. The accident happened near the SR 436 interchange going eastbound on I-4. The driver has been charged with careless driving.

Federal regulations govern the number of hours that a semi-tractor truck driver can drive per day. Regulations also govern how many hours of sleep the driver is expected to get each night. Drivers are supposed to log in their driving start and stop time and how many hours they slept.

Unfortunately, drivers routinely falsify their log books and ignore regulations while driving. GPS records can sometimes verify those log books or show discrepancies. A tired driver is a threat to safety, especially since some will use simulants to stay awake.

Drivers are not supposed to drive more than ten consecutive hours or more than eleven hours in a day. There are more regulations governing time on the road and log books are supposed to accurately record those events.
