Elderly woman killed in Bay County, Florida traffic accident

Posted on Sep 24, 2010

A woman was killed in a Bay County traffic accident. Our condolences go out to her friends and family.

An 86-year-old man was driving on State Road 77. A driver of an SUV did not yield to a red light at the intersection of highway 388 and crashed into the 86-year-old’s car. One of his passengers, an 81-year-old woman, was killed in the accident.

The 86-year-old man and the other passengers in his car, a 76-year-old and an 86-year-old, are in the hospital. They are in serious and critical conditions.

Charges are pending against the driver who failed to yield and apparently caused the accident.

While it appears that age was not a factor in this accident and the elderly driver was not at fault, age does affect driving eventually. The aging driver can take measures to protect himself and those who share the road with him.

As you age, you should take precautions:

  • Have your hearing and vision checked regularly.
  • Know your medications and how they may affect your driving.
  • Stay physically fit.
  • Check your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes.
  • Avoid driving under stressful conditions.
  • Plan your route in advance so you don’t have to worry about navigating while you drive.
  • Make sure your vehicle is up to date with large mirrors, good visibility and power options that help you drive.
  • Keep your driving skills active and well practiced.
  • Avoid alcohol since it affects older drivers particularly badly.

If you take precautions, you should be able to drive safely as you age.
