A naked man yelling he was Jesus caused a five-vehicle accident on Saturday, June 5, 2010 near exit 16 on I-95. The accident injured three people, destroyed a tractor-trailer truck, and slowed traffic to a crawl for six hours.
Police responded to a call reporting a naked man on I-95 near exit 14. When they approached him, he jumped into a car and drove away. He was finally pulled over near exit 16.
At that point, a distracted driver stopped short to get a better view of the police incident. A tractor-trailer driver slammed on his brakes to avoid the stopped car. The truck jackknifed and hit four cars before flipping over.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and took over three hours to get the truck driver out of his vehicle. It took two fire crews to rescue the driver. The driver's hand, head, arms, and legs had been pinned in the truck.
Firefighters had to use almost every tool they had to extract the driver. For a while, rescue units could only see the driver's elbow.
Eventually paramedics arrived, and they were able to crawl into the vehicle to treat the driver. EMS trauma workers took the driver to Norwalk Hospital.
Fire crews also had to clean up diesel fuel that was leaking from the destroyed tractor trailer. A road sign hit by the truck also fell onto a Darien police cruiser at the scene.
The accident completely closed I-95 from exit 14 to exit 16 for hours. Two lanes were closed from about 6:00 AM until 11:00 AM, and all lanes were reopened by noon.
Further investigation is pending.
