A Cocoa Beach motorcycle accident leaves a man behind bars after he turns in front of a motorcycle and then flees the accident scene. The incident took place at approximately 6:00 PM on Sunday evening, March 14, 2010, at the intersection of State Road A1A and 1st Street.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Kenneth Elmore, 31, of Orlando, turned into the path of a 2005 Honda motorcycle, causing the bike to hit the car. Elmore then fled the scene but was later apprehended and placed behind bars.

The motorcyclist, Dax Davis, 37, of Cocoa Beach, along with his passenger, were transported by rescue crews to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne where they were treated for injuries sustained in the accident.

Davis’ passenger has been identified as 43-year-old Valerie Shumate. Davis suffered minor injuries while Shumate’s injuries were described as critical. Neither of the motorcyclists were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.

Troopers reported that Elmore, driving a 2007 Ford Focus, was heading southbound on SR A1A and changed lanes to turn onto 1st Street when the accident occurred.

The Cocoa Beach motorcycle accident is still under investigation by local authorities.
