The Social Security Administration allows you to apply for disability benefits onlineThe Social Security Administration (SSA) offers benefits to people with long-term disabilities. These benefits may help cover associated expenses relating to disabilities that last for a year or longer or result in death. If you or a loved one is eligible to receive benefits from SSA, you may apply online to qualify. Applying online can be a lengthy process—approximately two hours—but you may complete the form in multiple sittings, saving your progress along the way.

What You Will Need

In order to apply online for disability benefits through SSA, you’re required to provide:

  • Background information
  • Disability information
  • A signed medical release
  • Confirmation of the required information

The online form guides you in the correct order and prompts you to input the necessary information. If you do choose to complete the form in one sitting, record your re-entry number, which will be provided to you upon completion of the background portion of your application. This number allows you to return to complete the form at a later time.

What If I Don’t Have All of the Information?

You may toggle from tab-to-tab at the top of the form page and skip sections for which you do not have all of the required information. However, it’s important to save what you’ve entered so far before changing tabs; otherwise any previous entries are lost.

Save your work at any time by:

  • Clicking “Next”
  • Clicking “Previous”
  • Clicking “Save and Exit”

I’ve Completed the Form: Now What?

Upon completion of the online form, you’ll receive:

  • A confirmation number
  • Instructions on next steps
  • A list of documents to have readily accessible for further discussion
  • Copies of your transaction
  • Contact information to get answers to any questions that may arise
  • Other helpful information about the SSA disability program

Once the application is processed, a decision will be mailed to you.
