In addition to being known for the sunshine, Florida is also known as a place that receives a lot of rain. Though you may have the knowledge and experience for operating a vehicle in the rain, you can’t assume your teen does. Their inexperience can lead to a serious Daytona Beach car accident.

Providing a Good Example

When it comes to teen driving behavior, it’s important to understand that teens tend to mimic their parents. Whatever your teen sees you do, they may do also. As a parent, you can provide a good example, no matter the weather, by avoiding:

  • Speeding.
  • Driving distractions, such as texting.
  • Following too closely to other vehicles.
  • Running red lights and stop signs.
  • Impatient driving behaviors.

Driving in the Rain

Rain creates slippery road conditions, especially if it hasn’t rained in a while. Your teen’s inexperience can cause them to slide off the road or into oncoming traffic. Either way, the results can be catastrophic. When driving in the rain, your teen should:

  • Slow down. They should understand that it is encouraged to drive under the posted speed limit in risky conditions. Driving at a slower speed will make it easier for them to respond to a sudden road danger.
  • Headlights. When driving in the rain, all drivers, no matter their age, should drive with their headlights on. This will help your teen see the road ahead, as well as make it easier for other drivers to see them.
  • Air conditioner/defroster. Keeping the air conditioner and/or defroster on during the cool rain can help visibility.
  • Pull off to the side of the road. Your teen does not need to proceed to their destination when the rain is coming down hard. Explain to them that it is all right to pull into a parking lot and wait out the storm. Being late is a much better option than being hospitalized.

Tires and Wiper Blades

You can’t always be in the car with your child. However, you can do certain things to ensure your teen is properly prepared to handle driving in the rain, such as making sure:

  • The tires have the proper tread.
  • The windshield wipers are in good shape and working properly.
  • The car has enough oil and gas. The last thing you want is for your teen to be stranded on the side of the road during a downpour.
