Good news for Florida, but not so good for Volusia and Flagler county.  A recent report by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shows that 2010 had fewer traffic fatalities than the year before. In fact, Florida has seen reduced fatalities each year for the last 5 years.  However, Volusia county had a total of 105 traffic fatalities in 2010, 11 more than the year before.  Flagler county had 23 fatalities in 2010, 7 more than the year before.

Many vehicles travel through Volusia and Flagler county.  There are many tourist destinations in these counties.  Increased traffic can lead to an increase in accidents.  Many out of state visitors travel south to Florida on I-95 and many use I-4 to head to theme parks or the West coast.  Unfortunatley, I-95 and I-4 are two of the most dangerous highways in America and they intersect in Daytona Beach.  Therefore, it is important to be cautious when traveling on Volusia and Flagler roadways in order to avoid accidents and serious injuries.

Below are some of the findings included in the DHSMV report.  As shown, traffic fatalties involving motorvehicles, motorcycles and pestrians are down.

-- State Mileage Death Rate (the number of deaths per 100 million miles traveled) decreased to 1.25 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2010 and is the lowest since the rate has been calculated.
-- During the past five years, fatalities have dropped every year from 2005 with 3,533 to 2010 with 2,444, which is a 30.8 percent reduction.
-- Traffic crash fatalities on Florida roadways fell between 2009 and 2010 by 4.6 percent, going from 2,563 to 2,444 respectively.
-- Motorcycle rider and passenger fatalities decreased between 2009 and 2010 by 4.7 percent from 402 to 383 respectively.
-- Bicyclist and passenger fatalities plunged between 2009 and 2010 by 24 percent from 99 to 76 respectively.
-- Teen crash fatalities fell between 2009 and 2010 by 5.9 percent from 153 to 144 respectively.
