What the NHTSA found
According to the NHTSA’s findings:
- In the first three months of 2012, traffic deaths were up from the previous year by an estimated13.5 percent.
- An estimated 7,630 people lost their lives in the same period of 2012.
- That is up from an estimated 6,720 deaths in 2011.
- This represents the biggest jump since 1979.
Warmer weather may be a factor
Though there is no conclusive evidence as to why the number of traffic deaths has increased, many attribute it to a warmer winter. Traffic deaths during the first three months of the year are generally lower than the rest of the year since less people travel during this time because of the wintery conditions.
