You’ve decided you’re going to take a road trip from Daytona Beach to Miami. You know you have about four hours of riding ahead of you, and decide to do it early Saturday morning so you can spend the entire day in this vibrant town.

An hour into your trek down I-95, a tractor-trailer driver loses control of his vehicle and jackknifes. The tail end of the truck sways dangerously on the roadway, knocking into a few cars and your motorcycle. You are left with a concussion, a broken pelvis, and a few other minor injuries.

The Most Dangerous Time to Get on Your Bike

Although this accident certainly wasn’t your fault, was there any way you could’ve prevented it from happening? A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration studied the risks. Research suggests that riding your bike on certain days and times can increase your chances of becoming involved in a collision:

  • Daytime. Of the multi-vehicle crashes studied, more accidents occurred during the daytime—anytime between 6:00 am to 5:59 pm—than at night. Specifically, 1,027 accidents occurred during the day, compared to the 746 accidents that took place during the nighttime hours.
  • Weekends. Of the 1,027 crashes that occurred during the daytime, 43 percent of those accidents happened on Saturdays and Sundays. Out of the 746 crashes that took place at night, 55 percent happened on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.
